No I am not writing a review on tea (not today anyway). Today I am writing about my impressions of Linux Mint (a Debian/Ubuntu based distro). I have wiped my laptop to install this after reading this excerpt from Distrowatch:
Linux Mint is one of the surprise packages of the past year. Originally launched as a variant of Ubuntu with integrated media codecs, it has now developed into one of the most user-friendly distributions on the market – complete with a custom desktop and menus, several unique configuration tools, a web-based package installation interface, and a number of different editions. Perhaps most importantly, this is one project where the developers and users are in constant interaction, resulting in dramatic, user-driven improvements with every new release. DistroWatch has spoken to the founder and lead developer of Linux Mint, Clement Lefebvre, about the history of the distribution.
I have been driven crazy since installing Karmic (Ubuntu 9.10 – codename Karmic Koala). I have experienced all of the following:
- CPU: 90-100%
- SL Sounds Distorting
- Unable to connect to voice.
Special thanks to Fred Rookstown for the dependency script included in the latest FlexLife build!
Ok, so all of a sudden I am recieving search queries for ‘linux smell-o-vision module’. Now as much as I love linux I don’t think this exists. Can you imagine the smell you would get from ‘The King of Alts’ when he started talking? I am guess it would be worse than the manure I put at the base of my roses annually.
I am sorry to say the formation of the ‘linux smell-o-vision module’ remains a little way off. Not that I would want it. I don’t even use voice often, because of all the mindless BS spouted over it.
Hey, like the image? It reminds me of some middle aged guy still living with his mother, jerking of whilst she visits the store! (and I bet she doesn’t put a gun to the head of someone leaning against her Ferrari – XD)
Anyways, thanks guys for the visits. Yesterday was this blogs busiest day of all time. We reached 823 unique visitors. Note ‘unique’ this isn’t people coming back or robots, just first time visitors (for that day not all time – XD).
Also it is good to see so many linux users. There are more of us linux users than ‘out of the box’ windows and internet exploder users. Haha!
[EDIT] Prize upgraded to a maximum of 3000L$ -
Thats right, I have watched the clip again and noticed more than one typo (crazy fingers).
So I figured the first person to correctly list all the typo’s and the times they appear at will win 2000L$. Then if they can guess the original typo (and this will be a guess due to the amount) will win a bonus 1000L$
Ok, so you want 1000L$ for nothing (actually it is not nothing), simply watch the following film and tell me at what time, the word I left in and the correct word,I left as a deliberate typo. Now this is made more difficult because I make quite a few typos. But only one was deliberate and was left in.

After reviewing the stats for my blog and the DISTURBED website I am pleased to see 40% of visitors are now linux users.
This news is great, people are seeing they don’t have to be tied to microsoft any longer.
Also it should be noted Firefox comes in at 82% whilst IE draws 10%, Chrome draws 5% and the rest are unknowns.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think all software should be completely free. I think if a person takes the time to develop an application then should reap its rewards. What I dislike about the likes of microsoft is their greed, they way they insist on trying to dominate the industry.
I have been a linux user for years (slackware admin in 95 or 96). I have seen the evolution to todays distros. Today, it just works. i am yet to have a pc I cannot install one distro or another. And, of course, now Second Life just works on it – perfect.
I would recommend a visit to distro-watch and download a version. Most now have a live environment to play with. Try it, see the increase in speed from the power of an unbloated linux install.
And before anyone starts, but what about security and virus protection – use google. Linux is far superior to windows in security and has little risk of virus infection! Hey and guess what? The software is free, yes free. Just download it and install – simple. And yes, it is compatable. Open office does what microsoft office does. In fact there is so much software it is difficult to choose.
Anyways, back to server side scripting – thanks for all the hits!
